Most everyone has heard about the depletion of available IPv4 addresses and the urgency to get new IPv6 ones. IP addresses have a limits,so to compensate for that web hosting providers offer shared hosting accounts rather than dedicated IP hosting.

Whether you are using web applications for CRM (customer relationship management), POS (point of sale), or for an e-commerce storefront and shopping cart, you will probably want to make sure transactions, logins, and the collection of user data is secure. Unless you are using a third-party e-commerce provider to handle transactions, the best way to make sure they are secure is to use SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or TLS (Transport Layer Security). With this security technology, your customers will connect to your site via secure HTTPS rather than plain HTTP.

In order to function properly, SSL requires a dedicated IP address, and many web hosts will offer special packages for e-commerce users who need them. You will also need an SSL certificate, which user agents (web browsers) will use to validate the authenticity of your secure transaction. Anytime a customer initiates a transaction on your secure site, the information exchange will be encrypted and safe from prying eyes.

So can you have an e-commerce site without a dedicated IP address? Yes, but not having SSL certificate will prevent you from being able to offer customers a secure shopping environment directly on your site. When it comes to customers you want to build a trusting relationship, and for that, you will probably need a dedicated IP so as to be able to offer them the security they need.

Will the Downtime of ICANN’s New gTLD Application System Affect Web Hosts?

In an statement released by ICANN chief operating officer Akram Atallah he stated that while they continues to investigate the technical glitch that forced them to take the new gTLD application system offline two weeks ago, they are making progress. Atallah said that over the weekend, “ICANN was able to identify all the applicants that were affected by the technical issue that allowed some users to view a limited number of other applicants’ file names and user names.”

ICANN will inform the affected applicants prior to reopening since it is still gathering information, and continues to test the fix. While the TAS was first slotted to be reopen last week, that deadline was pushed to April 30, and now ICANN expects that date to be carried over into May, although it hasn’t given a specific date yet.

Their post in their FAQ says, “ICANN reassures applicants that the system was not the target of a hack, and has not found any evidence that the issue caused corruption or loss of data, but despite this, the delay has caused a lot of frustration for applicants.”

Since they opened up in January, and organizations or individuals had to pay upwards of $185,000 to participate, the application process has already been lengthy, and costly, two factors that have compounded the frustration.

“I think a lot of what’s happening here and a lot of the noise that you’re hearing is a bit of frustration given that this whole process has taken a while, and a lot of people have a lot invested in these applications,” Adam Eisner, director, OpenSRS product management says in a phone interview with the WHIR. “A lot of what happens next is dependent on when these get approved. I think in the grand scheme of things it’s a small delay, but a frustrating delay.”

Eisner says that in the short-term, there’s no impact on OpenSRS or web hosts because regardless of the problem with the application system, new TLDs wouldn’t have been live this year anyway. He says that most web hosting companies that are planning to roll-out some of the new extensions don’t expect to do so until 2013.

One of the major concerns of the technical glitch was the exposure of applicant names and file names, but Eisner doesn’t think it will have a real effect on the outcome of the application process.

“One of the big mysteries about this whole application process is that most people are holding their cards close to their chest so a lot of people don’t know who is going to apply for what,” Eisner says. “If you happen to have logged in and you happened to see a file name so you know that a certain string was applied for or a certain person was applying for that string it gives you a little bit of knowledge.”

“If you know that somebody was applying for the same string as you you could start talking to that person I suppose or you might be able to plan accordingly or make other adjustments but it’s not going to influence ICANN’s decision on your application or anything,” he says.

Despite the delay, and the bad press that has come with it, Eisner is sympathetic to ICANN since it is under a lot of pressure and scrutiny from a lot of different groups.

“when you’re building a complex system like this there can be a tendency to over-engineer things when really what they’re trying to do is satisfy the requirements of so many different players involved and that can be really tough,” Eisner says. “Long term I don’t think it’s going to have an adverse impact but I can also appreciate that a lot of people are a bit frustrated that a process that has taken a while is now going to be extended that much more.”

Social Media and the Impact it has on SEO

There is a lot talk about social media these days. From being a means of sharing information (forum), maintaining contact with friends (Facebook) and be heard on your own communication platform (blogs), social media has evolved into something that actually makes a big difference in the real world. But what about the SEO and social media? Does it exist in social search? In this article we look at just that.

What is social search?

Social search is simply the name of a search made in a search engine whose results are affected by who is seeking. The idea behind the concept is that the more information a search engine may have about you, the more relevant search results may show. If you just google the word “truffle” it is difficult, indeed impossible, for Google to know if it’s chocolate truffle or truffle fungus you are referring to. All Google can do then is to show a neutral result algorithms that judge as relevant as possible (based on links, content, and all that we have reviewed in earlier columns).

But if you are active on Google + and constant circles in chocolate mills and chocolate manufacturers? And if you only see movies about chocolate making on YouTube? Slowly but surely, Google will be putting two and two together and start showing more and more chocolate truffles in your search results (and ad impressions).

In the same way, the social search with your contacts in social networks (like Google have access to). Google +1Is a good example of it, as well as relatively new Google Search Plus Your World. It’s all about relevance to those looking.

Does it work?

Yes and no. In some areas it works quite well, but one must remember that there are still many who do not like to Google +. Facebook and Twitter does not allow Google’s spiders to collect otherwise valuable and relevant data, and although more and more are googling while logged into their Google Account (which also means that you are logged) so the proportion is still small.

Tests have not been able to demonstrate that the links in social media reinforces a page’s rank, but it is clear that we as SEOs is right to have your ear tightly glued to the ground in this area.

What is the goal of your marketing and SEO?

So social search is still in its infancy, but that does not mean you should condemn social media for marketing purposes. The goal of your SEO is reasonable to drive traffic, and where social media plays a very important role. How and where to market themselves in these is a completely different post, but when it comes to optimization just for search engines is the connection to social media still pretty weak.

When it comes to search engine optimization, it has recently become important to keep a good social profile, as this can have a positive impact on the investments you have in the various search engines, primarily Google. It is not only SEO reasons that social media have become important for companies but also to be able to get a better contact and proximity to potential customers and existing customers – which is why many companies choose to maintain a high presence among another Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn are some of the biggest social networks in which firms may also have a profile. It has, however, can be annoying is the company which has achieved many “likes” on Facebook or “followers” on Twitter, but that does not use this for search engine optimization, but this can be quickly remedied.

It was in an email interview conducted by Search Engine Land in December last year with Google and Bing by journalist Danny Sullivan was able to answer the question that many asked themselves over a long period; Has social media any impact on SEO? The answer he gets from both Google and Bing is that they include and use Retweet in Twitter and “likes” into Facebook to read social cues and what’s popular content. Matt Cutts makes shortly after Danny Sullivan’s interview is also a YouTube video in which he publicly and in plain language confirms what was said in the interview.
The U.S. side SEOmoz is a kind of news site and forum for SEOs around the world during the middle of 2011 made several separate investigations into how much influence that social media has actually been on the actual rankings in Google. The first test was that one of the users urged other users on Twitter to share a link to a non-profit organization that among other things, worked to reduce hunger in Sierra Leone. After that before did not exist at all on the home page of Google when searching for “ending hunger in Sierra Leone” and took only a few hours first place – this, after exactly 522 of them shared the link to the page on Twitter. Many similar tests were made by others on SEOmoz and several interesting results were painted up in which the result was a much better place just because of tweets containing the link. The more number of followers as the tweets page’s URL was, the stronger the effect seemed to have – something that Google also confirmed in the interview. In the interview by Danny Sullivan as told Google also has several interesting points regarding how much influence where and how it was calculated. Among other things, tell Google to use and read the links shared by pages (pages) on Facebook and does not use shared links, some of the current situation is not available.

To build on the information that Google has released publicly through the interview with Search Engine Land and the Youtube video Matt Cutts published so should companies who wish to give an impetus to its website to share them both on Twitter and their Facebook page. By getting such followers on Twitter to retweet tweets containing a link to its site so this may therefore result in a higher position in Google and Bing. Interesting will be to see if Google chooses to give any more information regarding the influence and perhaps it might be that the search engines in the future also will read the personal divisions that are made in Facebook – something that surely would do good.
